Τhe Hidden Gems of Santorini (Akrotiri-Red Beach)

The hike “officially” starts at Akrotiri square. Part of the fun of this hike is exploring the town of Akrotiri and the medieval castle of Akotiri, so feel free to leave the official walking path if you see something interesting and lets get lost to the narrow streets of the town together!

Once in Akrotiri, we walk to Balos cove.

Balos is a small cove north west of Akrotiri village. In the 19th century it was used as a small commercial harbour that serviced the needs of the community in the area.
There we will have the opportunity to see the caves on the Caldera cliffs where nuns used to live there in older times, Stunning rock formations over Balos beach and Agios Nikolaos church next to the sea.
Continue the walk next to the water until we reach Apothikes beach.
Apothikes beach is a scenic beach located close to Akrotiri, overlooking caldera villages, the volcano, as well as Thirasia island. It is quiet with black sand and pebbles and deep, clear waters.

As we walk uphill from Apothikes beach we will reach the cemetery of Akrotiri and we will walk to the wine trails of Akrotiri.
Experience this wonderfully enlightening and fun wine walk on the wine roads of Santorini. See how vines are grown in a vineyard, hear about their production processes. You will have the opportunity to try Santorini’s volcanic varieties of wine at the local taverna next to the sea when the tour will finish.

From the wine trails to Akrotiri prehistoric city .

*an option is to visit the prehistoric city. (+1hour to the total duration)
The Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri was one of the most important Minoan urban centres and ports in the Aegean Sea when it was covered by volcanic ash in the 17th century BC. . As the town was covered in ash following a volcanic eruption on the island, preservation of the settlement is exceptional, making this one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece. Today the site is covered by a bioclimatic roof and walkways are suspended above the archaeological remains, that allows visitors to walk among the two and three-storey buildings.

Continue to walk from the prehistoric city to world famous Red beach.

The Red Beach of Santorini is without a doubt one of the most stunning and interesting beaches on the island, that stands out for its color! A unique spectacle and a site of rare beauty is the Red Beach of Santorini island! So get ready to visit it and be amazed!

Highly recommended The Cave of Nikolas

Very close the archeological site in the bay of Akrotiri offering one of the most selected cuisines on the island made from the best raw materials. Here you will try the best versions of the most representative island dishes, selecting from the themed- menus with proposals from the Greek, the santorinian and the sea-food. Minas and his mother Margarita will look after you. Specialities: white eggplant mousakas and fresh fish properly grilled.
